SECRET INQUIRY

r FOREIGN OFFICE CURRENCY SCANDAL NEWSPAPER PROTESTS 5k Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Friday. The Government inquiry into the allegations regarding gambling in currencies by officials of the Foreign Office, made in the course of the action brought by the banking firm of Ironmonger and Company against Mrs. Amorita Dyne, has opened. The proceedings were held in private, and will probably last for a fortnight. The board of inquiry will report to the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, and Cabinet will decide whether the report shall be published or not. The inquiry is being conducted by Sir Warren Fisher, the Permanent Secretary of the Treasury, Sir Malcolm Ramsay, the Comptroller and Auditor-General, and Mr. M. L. Gwyer, the Procurator-General and Solicitor to the Treasury. Although these gentlemen are members of the Civil SerYice, they are not connected with the foreign Office. Mr. H. F. B. Maxse, of the Foreign Office, whose name was mentioned in the case, Is, like his colleague Mr. W. D. Gregory, not on duty at present. The “Daily Express” protests against the secrecy of the Inquiry. The paper says this is a case where there is no need, and not even an excuse, for meeting publicity with privacy.—A. and N.Z.
