CHILD BORN AT SEA NAMED “MAUNGANUI”

A child born on the journey from Auckland to Sydney will probably hate the good ship Maunganui with an undying hatred all her life. She has been named after the ship. In mid-ocean a baby girl was born to one of the passengers, Mrs. Silverton, who sailed from Auckland on the last voyage of the Maunganui. On arrival at Sydney she was christened Mary Maunganui Silverton—“Mary” after a stewardess, Mrs. Deighton, and “Maunganui” after the ship. Passengers on the vessel subscribed £2l 10s for the baby, but when one thinks of the children who are already resenting the names of “Mons” and “Somme” and “Jutland,” this amount will not repay her for having been branded “Maunganui.”
