NEGLECTED IN LIFE: FETED IN DEATH
A NEW ZEALAND sportsman with a fine turn of irony once gave to a horse by Absurd— Eulogy the name of Epitaph. One is reminded of this fact by the death of Griffo, and the many lavish tributes paid at hisfuneral. He went to his grave in a £SOO coffin, born by such illustrious personalities in the fighting world as Tex Rickard, James Corbett and Jack McAuliffe, with floral tributes from Tunney, Dempsey and other famous boxers of to-day. These graceful tributes to the memory of the master artist of the ring are not depreciated, but one cannot resist the thought that in the closing years of his life Griffo was doomed to poverty in a New York rooming house, forgotten by all but a few who still remembered him, while his pres-ent-day successors grew rich on the proceeds of htige purses and few fights. It is a grim commentary on human nature that a man neglected in life is feted in death—his Epitaph an Absurd Eulogy.
