HYNANNA WINS EGMONT CUP
REREMOANA Ut FORM SURPRISE IN HACK CUP (Special to THE SVX.) HAWERA, Thursday. The Egmont races opened to-day in beautiful weather, with a good attendance. The Cup was well won by Hynanna from Mint Leaf, while the big hack race, the Nolan Cup, was won by Blimp from Greengrocer. The totalisator handled £5lB more than on the opening day last year, the figures to-day being £22,592. NUCLEUS’S SURPRISE The meeting commenced with the Ohawe Hurdles, in which the favourites were Airtight, Pink Rose and Hymgreat. Nucleus went to the front at
the start and led through the straight the first time from San Fera, Hymgreat, Airtight and Troillus. Flowing Bowl moved up along the back, but Nucleus was never headed, and won by half a dozen lengths from Airtight, who easily beat San Fera for second place, •while Flowing Bowl was fourth and Hymgreat fifth. Nucleus and San Fera should both improve. EASY FOR REREMOANA Reremoana was a strong favourite for the Flying Handicap. Vast Acre went to the front at the start and Star and Town Bird were slow away. Reremoana followed her into the straight, then to take charge ancl win in a canter by a couple of lengths from Vast Acre, who beat Tip Tree by three lengths, with Sarchee fourth and Benzora fifth. Vast Acre should go well on the second day. ONE FOR LUCERNE Upoko, one of George Reid’s team, was made favourite for the Tokoara Hack Handicap, but there was a good spread of wagering. Paul Lucerne was first away, but Ned Kelly and Eka soon took charge and led to the ! straight. Here Powhiri went to the I front, but Paul Lucerne was pushed along in the last few strides to win by a neck from Powhiri, with Ned Kelly a good third and Onward fourth. Powhiri and Onward were the unlucky horses of the race. THE CUP CONTEST Piuthair did not contest the Egmont Cup, and Hynanna went out favourite, backed down to a short price. Bright Glow led out from Orazone and Mint Leaf, with Toma last, and this was more or less the 9rder for a mile, when Bright Glow drew out and made for home with a big lead. Mint Leaf had her a furlong from home an i looked a winner tilL Hynanna shot up
on. the outside and had the field beaten in a few strides. He won by a length and a-half from Mint Leaf, who defeated Bright Glow by a head for second place, while Yoma ran up into fourth place. If Bright Glow is not already affected bv the race she will be hard to beat on Saturday. ANOTHER FOR MR. KEMBALL • Le Champ. Gold Dawn and Te Ati - awa made the early running in the •Juvenile Handicap, but in the straight Miss Ransom ran over everything and won by a length from Royal Ceres, who was always well up. and Fermanagh, with Gold Dawn fourth. Miss Ransom should win again. BLIMP AT A PRICE Perhaps the best race of the day was the Nolan Cup, for which Goshawk was favourite. Miss Mercia went to the front and led along tue back from. Blimp, Sovena and Flying Shot, while Keddar and Goshawk wii’.c not far awav with Greengrocer well back. Greengrocer shot into the picture on the home turn, where Goshawk also moved up. Blimp went right away in the 'straight ana won by a couple of lengths from Greengrocer, with Goshawk three lengths back third. Flying Shot was fourth and Lady Killer fifth. The hoise that should improve most is Goshawk. TIEGA ALL THE WAY The public went heavily for Vivo in the Whareroa Handicap, but the Hawera horse was never in a dangerous position. The rider of Dobbin (C. Broughton) was found guilty of incompetent riding and was suspended for 14 days from to-day.
