LATE TURF

EXHIBITION AT AUCKLAND NATIVE CHIEF MAY COME ATTEMPT ON MILE RECORD An offer has been received by the secreary of the Otahuhu Trotting Club, Air. R. Absolum, from the trainer of Native Chief, who on February 11 will try conclusions with Great Bingen in an exhibition pacing bout over a mile at Addington, to visit Auckland and give an exhibition over a similar distance at the Otahuhu Club’s fixture the following- week, for a purse. The secretary, after consultation with the executive, replied that the club did not think it necessary to stage an exhibit 5 go, but would offer n

pyrse of £IOO for Native Chief to lower the existing mile record, or, in the event of the pacer succeeding in reducing the time by two seconds, the purse would be increased to £ 250.

TROTTING TEST

GREAT BINGEN’S TRY-OUT MATCH WITH NATIVE CHIEF (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Considerable interest was taken in Great Bingen’s essay at Addington this morning, where his assignment was a mile and a-quarter. The track was in splendid order, and the conditions ideal for making fast time. After being warmed up, D. Withers set the champion to work, and he went alone, cutting out the first four furlongs in 1.31. Withers then steadied him for about a furlong, but lie came

home full of step, the watch reading 2.41 i for the distance. He cut out the last half-mile in and the concluding two furlongs in 325. Great Bingen looks very well, and pulled very hard while doing his preliminary. His performance was a good, one, and showed that he will be at the top of his form for his match with Native Chief, which will take place at Addington on Saturday, February 11.
