Oratrix-Dobbin Is the Winning Double
FIRST DAY AT PAHIATUA SMALL FIELDS COMPETE (Special to THE SUH.J PALMERSTON N., "Wednesday. | Beautiful weather favoured the ! Pahiatua Racing Club to-day, but the J attendance was only moderate and fields were small, with the result that j the totalisator showed a substantial I fall of £3,137, the turnover only being £9,691. The Cup was a good race, ! won in solid style by Oratrix, who is ; an improving mare and will be heard of again. Dobbin won the open six furlongs race so easily that he should win again. T. Green had a successful day, riding three winners, and thus placing himself once again at the head of the jockeys’ list. NEARLY HALF OUT The original field of sixteen runners in the Maiden was reduced to nine by scratchings. Hinekatorangi, £ 232, and Aurora Boreafis £ 214, were in strong demand, Miss Scandal £155, being next in request. A ragged start saw the favourite well placed early, with Vindication, Brown Sugar and Aurora Borealis her nearest attendants. Approaching the three-furlong post Timi Inihi improved his position, and the order turning for home was Hinekatorangi, Vindication, Timi Inihi and Golden Shadow. At the distance Aurora Borealis came away from the centre of the field, but could make no impression on the leader, Hinekatorangi winning by three lengths, with Timi Inihi in third place a length back. Then came Miss Scandal and Vindication. UNSATISFACTORY START Starboard Light, Birkie and Capitulation were the defections from the Ballance High-Weight Handicap, in which Horomea £286, wound up favourite, although there was . good support forthcoming for Lady Gay £234, and Othon £229. An excellent start was spoilt by Othon, who had drawn the outside position, swinging round. Lady Gay, from No. 1 berth, was the first to show clear. She was immediately deposed by Willow Wai, who opened up a three-length break to the turn, where Wilderness ran up into second place, the Signor gelding being on terms at the straight entra.nce, with Lady Gay and Moepai racing together next. In the run to the post Wilderness drew out, with Lady Gay in hot pursuit, but the challenger just failed to overtake the Awapuni representative, a head separating them at the post. Willow Wai was three lengths back, clear of Horomea, Moepai and March On, the trio finishing in a rough line. ONLY THREE Backers in the Hamua Hack Handicap did not have a very wide field for selection, but three candidates goir to the post, Tintoretta £299, being preferred to Lieutenant Bill £202. Landrent acted as pacemaker right into the straight, Tintoretto and Lieutenant Bill racing together in behind, the favourite having the inside running. With heads straightened out the rear pair joined issue, Tintoretto drawing out to win by a length and a-half, with Landrent a length and a-quarter back HOW ORATRIX WON Seven candidates for Cup honours went to the post in the princip 1 event, Gaze, Bent, Lady Gay and Vigilance being umbered among the absentees. Oratrix £490, was installed a firm favourite from Capitulation £296 with Ardfinnan £231 next in request. Some little difficulty was experienced in getting the field into line and when the tapes lifted Kilmiss. and Royal Game were turned inwards and were badly left. Twink assu led the role of pacemaker to lead Oratrix, Kilmiss, Capitulation and Ardfinnan past the stands, Kilmiss having made up her ground fast. Going along The back straight Henna and Kilmiss were on terms, with Royal Game, Capitulation and Oratrix being in line in behind. They turned for home in that order, but Henna and Oratrix immediately drew out, with Ardfinnan also lodging a challenge, and in the race to the post Oratrix secured the advantage and went on to win by half a length from the fast-finishing Ardfinnan, with Henna a length and ahalf back. Kilmiss was right up fourth, with Capitulation in close attendance, Royal Game acting as whip-per-in. ALL IN THE MONEY The poor field of three horses was presented in the Konini Hack Handicap, Lin Arlington £302, being a firm favourite, with little between Volplane and Hypnotic. At the barrier r se Lin Arlington went to the front from Volplane, but at the half-mile Hypnotic was allowed to run in behind the leader, and entering the straight Hypnotic and Lin Arlington were on terms. The pair raced neck and neck all the way down the straight, but Green rode a confident race, on Hypnotic, to prevail by a head, with Volplane four lengths away. ONE FOR LADY CYNTHIA The scratching pen was again much in evidence in the Makuri Hack Han’ dicap, eight out of 14 failing to fulfil their engagements. Tom Byrne, who had the services of T. Green,. was elected to the post of favourite, the Tribulation gelling compared with Ruakura £368, and Tanagra £217. Ruakura, who had proved somewhat fractious, suffered at the rise of the tape, Carrigallen and Tom Byrne being the laders when the field had settled down, with Tanagra next in attendance. Approaching the straight entrance Tanagra ran up to the leaders, and the trio turned ter home in line. The favourite was early finished with, Tanagra drawing out with his stable companion, Cynthia, coming up fast. In a good finish the Cyntoi mare got f he verdict by a head from Tanagra, with R-ta-kura three lengths back. Then came Hinehoro, Tom Byrne and Carrigallen, with Tatrina bringing up the rear. DOBBIN WALKS IN A one-dividend field went to the post in the President's Handicap, Birkie and March On beng bracketed on the totalisator. Dobbin £571 was a firm favourite from Coot £374, with Deluge £304, next in demand. Dobbin, who had drawn the rails, was the first to show out, but Lady Ideal ran to the front to pilot Dobbin, Birkie, Coot, Deluge and March On to *the turn for home. Lady Ideal and Dobbin were
on terms at the straight entrance, Birkie being next in order ahead of Coot. In the run home Dobbin strode along to win comfortably by four lengths from Coot, with March On. who came with a surprising burst of speed, m third berth a length back. Then came Deluge and Birkie, with Lad> Ideal last, the pacemaker having faded completely out. FINAL TO LIN ARLINGTON Aro de Val was better backed than Lin Arlington for the Eketahuna Hack Handicap, and the favourites filled the principal places. Grey Mist and Miss Scandal led to the straight, where Lin Arlington and Aro de Val came through, and Lin Arlington won nicely by two lengths, while Aro de Val was luckife to beat Miss Scandal by a -head for second. Gordon Swift was fourth. Following are the concluding results: — HAMUA HACK HANDICAP Of £110; 1 mile 110yds. I—TINTORETTA, 9.0, R. Reed .. .. 1 2 LIEUT. BILL, 8.8, A. Half-brother to Heroic Cimbrian, a two-year-old halfbrother to the sensational Heroic, made his debut under silk at a meeting held recently in Victoria, and though he did not win, he is credited with making a pleasing effort: in fact, “Beacon,” of the Melbourne “Leader,” remarked that he ran well enough to suggest that he is likely to develop into a top-class performer. Cimbrian is a descendant of Devizes, who is by Valens (son of Laveno), who traces to Ben D’Or. Valais, who begat Heroic, was a descendant of Cicero, who also traced to Ben D’Or on the sire’s side, so that there is a great deal to interest in viewing the future of Cimbrian.
