I PAGLIACCI

Pietro Mascagni, composer of “Cavalleria Rusticana,” recently voiced his displeasure to an Associated Press interviewer, at the common juxtaposition of his opera and “I Pagliacci” as an evening’s entertainment. “I composed a oneact opera to be played with ‘Cavalleria,’ but my publishers and operahouse managers frustrated my intention, and refused to alter their traditional practice which unites two widely different compositions in a single programme.” Apparently opinion was not unanimous about the quality of Mascagni’s one-act opera.
