GOOD HEALTH AT EIGHTY
THE REV. GEORGE BOND VETERAN MINISTER To-morrow the Rev. George Bond, of Auckland, will celebrate his 80th birthday. ' He arrived in Auckland by the ship Warwick, on February 9, 1873, with the Rev. T. G. Carr, and he has worked through’ the sirenuous days which marked the early growth of the province and the city. Mr. Bond is still enjoying the best of health, and despite his advanced years, he takes a great interest in the affairs of the day. He was born in the county of Durham, England, at an early age he trained for the Methodist ministry. After three years of training he came to New Zealand, where ho was given many important posts in the Methodist Church. Mr. Bond was elected president of the Methodist Conference in 1832. He continued serving his church faithfully and well on many of the circuits. In 1915 he retired from pastoral work and was appointed general treasurer of the Home Mission and Church Extension Department, a position which he still holds. At one time he was secretary and treasurer of the Mission Property Trust. Mr. Bond lias always taken the greatest interest in social, educational and philanthropic movements. He holds the position of vice-president of the British and Foreign Bible Society and is- also vice-president of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. Stowaway Remanded.—John Garside (52) wanted to see New Zealand, so he stowed away on the Middlesex at Balboa, Panama Canal. He appeared at the Police Court to-day and was remanded for a week pending further inquiries.
