Death of Solicitor.—T. W. Rowe, aged 65, a well-known barrister and scholar, died yesterday at Christchurch.
Man Found Shot.—E. W. Chirnsidc. a fitter in the N.Z.K workshop.-. Rangataua, was found shot dead in his whare yesterday. The indications point to suicide. •
Bank for Te Puke.—lt is stated that the directors of the Bank of Australasia have decided to proceed with the erection of banking premises in Tc Puke at an early date.
Lights and Burglars.—Raetihi Chamber of Commerce has decided to ask the borough council to keep street lamps alight on Sunday nights to protect business premises from burglary.
New Schools.—The new' Rotorua High School will be opened on February 9, and the new Whakatane School on February 8, by the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. A. Wright.
Legacy to Salvation Army.—Under the will of the late Mr. James Godkin. of Mount Eden, a retired farmer, who died on January 15, a legacy of £I,OOO is bequeathed to the Salvation Army to be devoted to work in Auckland.
Napier Cottage Burned. A fourroomed house on Coote Road, Napier, owned and occupied by Mr. Board - man, was gutted by fire yesterday. Insurance totalled £550 on the hous* and contents in the Standard Office. The fire main burst immediately after the outbreak was subdued.
Bowling Sub-Centre. —On Tuesday evening the Te Puke Bowling Club decided to support the proposal to form a Bay of Plenty sub-centre. It was resolved to take no further action concerning affiliation with Auckland until the suggested formation of the *ubcentre is finalised.
Charge of Escaping.—Ross Thompson Munro (41) was charged to-day before Mr. E. C. Cutten. S.M., with escaping from Rotoroa Island on January 20. As a legal issue arose the case was adjourned for the purpose of hearing legal argument.
Struck by Trolley Handle.—Mr. F. H. Hoskins, a married man, aged 46. had his right shoulder blade injured when he was struck by the handle of a trolley while working on the Federal steamer Cambridge at Queen’s Wharf yesterday. He was treated at the Auckland Hospital and taken to hi* home at 296 Ponsonby Road, by the St. John Ambulance.
Child Burned. —When benzine, with which he was playing caught on fire yesterday afternoon. Lloyd Davidson, aged eight, was badly bJrned on the hands and feet. Fortunately his mother was close at hand and extinguished the flames. He was treated at the Auckland Hospital, and taken to hi* home at 31S Khyber Pass Road.
