GREAT PRICES

FOR BROOD MARES ENGLISH SIRES GO CHEAP Tlia dispersal sale of the Kinloch stud, which was established and run with great success for many years by the late Mr. J. F. Buchanan, was held on the property at Little River last week. The sale was conducted by | Pyne. Gould, Guinness, Ltd., in con- : junction with Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. Messrs. J. G. Robertson and D. Gould 'wer© the auctioneers. There was a large attendance of Canterbury breeders and racing men, together with a number of visitors from the North Island and Otago, while several Australian commissioners were also present. The mares with foals were sold first. Torquato and Mazabuka. two mares which have produced winners, were sold at moderate prices. They were followed by the imported mare Sweet Charity, a young mare, dam of Knightlike, a winner at his first start. She was accompanied by a filly foal by Martian, and was considered safely in foal to Limond. Bidding started at 300 guineas and continued quickly to 800 guineas, at which she was secuerd by Mr. H. M. F.eeves, of Hororata. She appeared to be a great bargain. Record Prices for Brood Mares Cymene, with colt foal by Limond and in foal to the same horse, was started at 600 guineas, and she travelled in rapid stages to 2,000 guineas, when Mr. H. M. Reeves stopped the opposition with a bid 2,250 guineas. There was warm applause when the hammer fell, the price being a record for a brood mare in the Dominion. Cymene is by the Cyllene horse Gylgad, from Hippocrene by Spearmint, son of Carbine, from Glass Jug, by Isinglass from Amphora, a sister to Sundridge. The next to enter the ring was Strona, another young English mare with colt foal by Martian and in foal to Diacquenod. Bidding for hex was sharp and short. She was started at 1,000 guineas, and five advances of 250 guineas each brought the price to 2,250 guineas, at which she was knocked down to Mr. K. Austin, of Chisholm and Co., Sydney, amidst applause. There was not much excitement about the other mares with foals. When the dry mares • were offered Messrs. Austin and Reeves were again in evidence, the former giving 375 guineas for the imported Polymnia, dam of The Cypher, The Polymnian, Accamar, and Battlement, in foal to Limond; while Mr. Reeves paid 325 guineas for the imported Spearmint mare Pineta, dam of Rapine, in foal to Paladin. Imported Stallions Not Wanted There was very little competition for the two English-bred stallions. Mr. A. G. Hill secured Paladin, by Polymelus, for 130 guineas, and he will join the Spearmint horse Last Dart at his new owner’s stud in the Taieri district. Mr. J. Donald paid only 325 guineas for Diacquenod, by Diadurnenos, son of Orby, and he will go to the Westmere stud, Wanganui, where Mr. Donald already has Chief Ruler and Tonbridge. Mr. Donald has also purchased Grand Knight, so that he now has four fashionably-bred English horses at his stud, which also boasts a fine collection of mares. The lack of competition for the two stallions was the disappointment of the Kinloch sale. Paladin has left some smart gallopers during a brief stud career, while Diacquenod, who is five years younger, will have nothing old enough to race for some time, the oldest of his progeny being foals. Mr. A. B. Williams as Breeder

The three mares purchased by Mr. H. M. Reeves were secured on behalf of Mr. A. B. Williams, the well-known Morth Island owner. In the past Mr. Williams has purchased the horses he has raced, but he has decided now to launch out as a breeder. The three mares Mr. Reeves bought at the Kinloch sale will go to his Horarata stud, where Mr. Reeves will have full control of them, rearing the progeny until it is time to hand over the yearlings to Mr. Williams’s trainer to be broken in for racing. Mr. Reeves is an enthusiastic student of breeding, but he is deservedly proud of the compliment paid to his select stud in having these high-class matrons committed to his care under such wide terms.
