EMPIRE TOBACCO
INCREASE OF OUTPUT BRITISH TARIFF INFLUENCE On© of the most notable features of the past year in the tobacco world has been the rapid increase of tobacco imports from the Dominions, reports “The Times Imperial Trade Supplement.” It may surprise many people to learn that up to the end of October the Empire sent us nearly 34,000,0001 b. of tobacco, or 9,000,0001 b. more than in the first 10 months of 1926, and more than twice the quantity sent in the same period in 1925. Spurred on by the growing popularity of their product, which, of course, is granted a preferential rate of duty in this country, several of the Dominions are increasing their growing areas considerably. In Canada, the area devoted to tobacco has increased by 32 per cent, since last year, the acreage being 44,028 now, against 33,356. It is estimated that the total yield for 1927 will be 43,916,7001 b. Canada, indeed, expects that in a few years’ time her tobacco crop will add to her wealth to the extent of £10,000,000 annually. Certainly there is no reason why the British market for the Empire product generally should not continue to expand.
