GLASS STAIR RODS

Plate-glass is now being used for so many purposes that it is somewhat surprising not to find stair rods of glass in the shops. The idea is perfectly practicable and capable of being carried out in many pleasing ways, for glass of all colours can be made. Stair rods of plain glass, through which the pattern of the carpet would show, should look well, although crystal glass might be still more effective, but many people would, no doubt, fear the crash that might occur if all the stair rods were dropped by a careless charwoman. As a matter of fact, however, thick plate-glass is not easily broken unless dropped on stone, and the glass stair rod could be made to withstand any ordinary usage. Probably the weak part would be in the middle, where there might be a certain amount of strain if the rods were held in place by ordinary brass eyes. Glass stair rods might be gjven a trial, for they would never require cleaning, and should look very decorative. They could, ‘of course, be made in different patterns, and possibly the three-cornered rod would prove stronger than a round one as this pattern is usually thicker.
