CARS FOR MURIWAI
TWO MACHINES ARRIVE SPEEDY COMPETITORS Two racing motor-cars to compete at the motor races on Muriwai Beach next Saturday were unloaded from the Marama yesterday morning. One car is said to be the most remarkable racer yet seen in New Zealand. It is a 1926 European Grand Prix model Bugatti, and although an eight-cylinder car it weighs only 12 cwt. The tiny cylinders are only 60 mm. bore and '66 mm. stroke. Only three such models have yet been built. Known as the Monza model, the engine can develop 150 h.p. at 7,000 r.p.m. The size of the engine is 1,494 c.c. This car recently attained a speed of over 100 m.p.h. at Maroubra Speedway, Sydney, a great achievement for that course. The experience gained there will be valuable to the owner, Mr. Russell-Taylor. The second car landed is a six-cylin-der Mercer, brought over by Mr. Guy Carter. This car competed at the 1924 races, when it was driven by Mr. Howard Nattrass, but was unsuccessful. Although not a recent model, this car can still perform very creditably.
