NEW REGENT
THE MONKEY MARVELS Max, Moritz and Akka, the monkey actors now appearing at the New Regent, continue to amaze the large houses with their antics. To see these animals carrying out evolutions on a tight rope that would have made Blondin highly envious was an instruction in itsef. Then, again, the amazing balancing feats executed by the clever three on real bicycles should be seen to be believed. Round and round the arena they pedalled, for all the world like three schoolboys showing off their prowess on new “bikes.” The well-nigh impossible tricks of the wheelman’s sport were performed with a carelessness that proclaimed long and patient teaching, by the two trainers. Both solo and concerted exhibitions of cycling were effected with apparent ease by Max, Moritz and Akka. Two rounds of a boxing bout—with the third “man” as referee —looked promising until one of the principals showed the white feather, and received a contemptuous kick on the seat of his patched pants from his bellicose opponent. In the Paramount picture, “Running Wild,” starring W. C. Fields, Frank Evans returns to the screen after an absence of a few years devoted to his brokerage business. His role is that of a hardened business man with a deep-rooted aversion for bill collectors. Fields is a victim of his ruthless tactics, but avenges his dignity when, deluded by a hypnotist into belief that he is a lion, he returns and boxes the formerly ferocious Evaijs into a state of helplessness. Evans is one of the principals in a cast headed by the star, with Mary Brian featured, and Claud Buchanan, Marie Shotwell, Frederick Burton and Barney Raskle in important parts. Eddie Horton plays a farewell programme on the Wurlizter organ, and Maurice Guttridge’s operatic is heard in several delightful selections from classic and popular composers.
