FARMERS’ UNION
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE POLITICAL ACTION Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. “You will remember that at the last Dominion Conference, a political committee was set up,” said Mr. W. J. Poison at the executive meeting of tho Farmers’ Union to-day. “Lately I have been pressed for information as to what has been done, but 1 am going to ask you to bear with the committee for just a little while longer. Theer are certain matters which I desire to discuss with the committee.” “The policy of the Government in regard to giving preference to New Zealand articles carried on the railways as against imported articles was se. out in a long letter from the lit. Hon. J. G. Coates. Inter al ; a, he pointed out that New Zealand made articles usually represent the carxiage of both raw material and the manufactured product, and for greater disstauces than the imported articles. Many businesses and industries had been built up oil the present order of things, and serious complications would immediately follow any drastic al'erations. There would also be a loss of £70,000 in revenue, and this would have to be made up from New Zealand-made goods. Discussing the arbitration system. Mr. Poison set the ball rolling by stating it was hoped to reach some iinality in regard to the question, and it was essential that the union should set up a committee to prepare evidence for submission to the proposed conference.
