Takapuna Holds Record Meeting
KEEN RACING AND SPECULATION THOUSANDS wended their way to the Takapuna races yesterday, and the result was an almost record meeting for the Takapuna Jockey Club. The racing was again most interesting, and altogether the fixture will go down in history as one of the best in the club’s annals. Despite the substantial totalisator decrease of the first day, this leeway was more than made up for yesterday, the investments for the two days showing a big rise.
The weather was again fine and very warm, and the accommodation at the convincing ground was taxed to the utmost. Nevertheless everything went oft in the most approved manner and in keeping with the record of the Takapuna Jockey Club in its management. There was little to engage the attention of the two stipendiary stewards, Messrs. A. Wilson and A. Gordon, the racing being clean throughout. The finishes for the most part were close and therefore exciting. Investments yesterday kept the totalisator staff exceedingly busy, but so well did they execute their tasks that there was very little money shut out, a state of affairs for which they must be given every credit, for the programme of races was well up to time. BIG INVESTMENTS The sum of £57,303 10s went through the totalisators yesterday, as against £ 39,100 on the concluding day .of the last summer meeting, an increase yesterday of £18,203 10s. The total for the two days amounted to £105,697 10s, compared with £97,313 last year, the increase for the meeting being £8,384 10s. Notes on the racing and details of concluding results will be found below LIAISON IMPROVES The big bettors missed badly when Palmares managed to get third place only in the opening event, the Moana Handicap, for the imported grey carried £1,131, as against La Roma £1,009, and the bracket Atapai-High Tide £698. A good start saw Atapai quickest out from Good Boy, Air King, Liaison, Palmares, Brilliant Light, Idun, Sir Henry, British King, La Roma and Storm Fiend. At the five furlongs Air King was making play from Liaison, Atapai, Palmares, Sir Henry, Storm Fiend, Idun, Luxurious, British King, La Roma and Brilliant Light, with High Tide and Captain Cobham the last two. Liaison headed Air King and was just in front of him into the straight, with Palmares, Atapai, British King. Brilliant Light, Luxurious, La Roma, Idun and Storm Fiend next in order. In the run up tho short straight Liaison always had it on Air King and beat him by a length. Three lengths away was Palmares, and British King was well up, fourth. ■ Then came Atapai, Brilliant Light, La Roma, Idun, Luxurious, Ahi Ngaro and Sir Henry. RED COMET IMPROVES The tjiree top weights in the Waiwera High-weight, Bold Front £1,355, Uralla £1,322, and Red Comet £1,198, monopolised the betting, Beau Cavalier £ 710 being at the head of the other
quotations. Lady Spalpeen was the early leader and showed the way* past the stands from Red Comet, Beau Cavalier, Uralla, Pekatahi, Bold Front and Blago, with Fame last and Acushla having pulled up with a broken fetlock. Running round the back Red Comet held command from Lady Spalpeen, Uralla, Bold Front, Pekatahi, Blago and Beau Cavalier. Red Comet was just in front of Bold Front into the straight, with Uralla, Lady Spalpeen and Pekatahi close up. The last named came with a rattle over the last bit, but failed to catch Red Comet, who won by a head, Bold Front being three parts of a length back. Uralla was fourth, and Blago, Lady Spalpeen and Beau Cavalier next home. MICROMETER’S SURPRISE In the Devonport Handicap also top weights were much in the boom, the five of them carrying good money, as follows: Speechless £1,987, Winsome Boy £925, Ripon Abbey £979, Orchus £B5l and Abbey Day £723. Lady
Robinson emulated the circus horse at the start, and after a delay was placed on the outside and finally got away well. Micrometer led out from Abbev Day, Luxurious, Orchus, Speechless, Ripon Abbey, Lady Robins9n and Adjuster. Passing the five furlongs Ladv Robinson went to the front and was clear of Ripon Abbey, Micrometer, Orchils, Abbey Day, Winsome Boy, Adjuster and Salamander, with Speech-
less heading the others. Into the Straight Lady Robinson was two lengths clear of Ripon Abbey, with Orchus, Micrometer and Abbey Day close up, and Winsome Boy, Speechless and Salamander next. Lady Robinson compounded quickly, and Micrometer came through to obtain the decision by half a length over Ripon Abbey and Orchus, who dead-heatod for second. Winsome Boy was fourth and Abbey Day fifth, while after them came Lady Robinson, Speechless, Salamander, Dress Circle, Luxurious and Adjuster. DAVE COMFORTABLY There were only half a dozen starters in the open sprint, the Suburban Handicap, and Tea Time, the first day’s winner/ was made favourite with £1,718, with Dave £1,665 almost as well backed, and Flying Juliet £1,159 at the head of the others. These filled the places. Tea Time began best from Flying Juliet, Melissa, Dave, Prince Otto, Appellent and Day Guard, and at the half-mile Dave, Flying Juliet, Prince Otto and Melissa were just behind Tea Time, with Appellant and Day Guard next, four lengths separating the whole field. Crossing the top Dave headed the favourite and led him
into the straight, with Prince Otto, Flying -Juliet, Melissa, Appellant and Day , Guard following. Dave went on to win comfortably by three parts of a length from Flying Juliet, who got up on the inside, while Tea Time was half a length away. Melissa was a couple of lengths back, fourth, and Prince Otto, Day Guard and Appellent crossed the line in that order. DESERT GLOW MAKES AMENDS . Transformer £2,477, Desert Glow C 2,332, and Eden Hall £1,253 carried most money in the big event, the fakapuna Handicap, and they filled the first three places. Scat set out to make the running and was followed bv Eden Hall, Hipo, Desert Glow, Wedding March, Princess Ronnie and Transformer. Passing the stands Scat was a length in front of Hipo and Wedding March, with Eden Hall, Desert Glow, Princess Ronnie and Transformer in close order. The last tried to get through on the rails on the bend an£ was knocked back. Scat and Hipo had little between them at the five furlongs, Eden Hall and Princess Ronnie being behind them a length and a-half * away, and with Transformer, Desert Glow and Wedding March handy. Transformer and Desert Glow moved up crossing the top, and the latter led into the straight clear of Hipo, Scat, Transformer, Eden Hall and Princess Ronnie. Desert Glow gave nothing else a show in tho straight and went on to win by two Lngths from Transformer and Eden Kail, who dead-heated for second money, the latter being very unlucky
in getting blocked at the turn. Hipo was another half-length back fourth, and Scat. Princess Ronnie and Wed ding March finished in that order. MITHRA AGAIN Of the half-dozen runners in tho Hobson Handipap, Mithra £1,178 was favourite, with White Wings £1,72*9 and Mauriaena £1,404 well supported. A good start saw Mauriaena jump away well from ‘Footpad, Merxcis. Mithra, White Wings and Prodice, but at the end of the first furlong Footpad had taken up the running, being attended at the half-mile by Mauriaena, Merxcis, Mithra, White Wings and Prodice, the field being In close order. At the three furlongs the favourite commenced her run, and she was first into the straight from Mauriaena, Footpad. White Wings, Prodice and Merxcis. Mithra easily held her own to scare by a length from Prodice, who finished too strongly for Mauriaena and beat her by three parts of a length for second place. White Wings was a good fourth, and. Footpad and Merxcis next. BABY BUN FINISHES WELL There were several defections in the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, and in a good pool best supported of the 10 .runners were Cynthia N. £1,487, The Lover £1,249, Piet £1,107 and Baby-
Bun £1,040. War Officer and The Lover were chopped out at the start. Value leading out of the straight from Piet, Arch Queen, Baby Bun, Cynthia N., Judge’s Box, Schorr, Quinsilia, The Lover and War Officer. Along the back Arch Queen was the pacemaker from Cynthia N., Piet, Judge’s Box, Baby Bun, Value, Quinsilia, Schorr, The Lover and War Officer. At the three furlongs Cynthia N. went to the front and was bowling along easily two lengths at the home turn, in front of Baby Bun, Arch Queen, Judge’s Box and Piet, with Schorr and The Lover
next. Cynthia N. weakened in the run to the judge and Baby Bun caught her to win by a ngck. Arch Queen finished nicely to get third half a length away, and The ' Lover was a Then came Schorr, Piet, Judge’s Box, Value, War Officer and Quinsilia. A HOT ONE SCORES Backers wanted nothing but The Immigrant in the concluding event, the Anniversary Handicap, he being entrusted with £2,756, while there was some support for Auramavis £1,486. Siaosi £1,358 and Matinee £958. All got away in a line, Matinee leading out from Te Koroke, Quillfire, Automne, Day Guard, Macroom, The Immigrant, Town Guard, N Siaosi, Archeno and Auramavis. At the end of two furlongs The Immigrant and Quillfire were together making the pace from Macroom, Matinee, Town Guard, Te Koroke, Day Guard and Siaosi, the favourite being clear of Macroom into the home stretch, this pair being followed by Matinee, Siaosi, Te Koroke, Quillfire and Automne. The Immigrant held his own to the judge, to win by a length and a-quar-ter, Matinee being half a length in front of Macroom. Te Koroke was fourth, and Day Guard and Siaosi were next.
