POLICE PROTECT VICAR

RIOTOUS CHURCH SCENES FREE FIGHTS DURING SERVICE By Cable.—Press Association .— Copyright. LONDON, Sunday. The disurbances at St. Cuthbert’s Church, Darwen, Lancas’. -‘e, where the congregation has protested against the Eucharist being sung, w r ere to-day resumed and culminated in riotous scenes after the service. The police had to be called to protect the vicar, the Rev. E. Lauria, and bis colleague, from a crowd of 2,000 People, who held up the traffic while the police barred the road. Personal conflicts occurred in the service, and the interrupters sang hymns which drowned the singing of the Eucharist. The vicar called in the police, who took the names of interrupters, while the clergy and choir took refuge in the vestry. The protesters sang the National Anthem.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
