DRY CANDIDATE WANTED
U.S. PRESIDENCY METHODISTS’ STAND KU KLUX KLAN THREAT By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Washington; Monday. The concern that supporters of prohibition feel over the possible nomination of Mr. Alfred Smith as the Democrat presidential candidate, was sharply emphasised to-day by the publication, on behalf of the conference of the Methodist Church Board, of a statement that all the large prohibition organisations would combine against him. The statement added that the prohibitionists will demand that only a “dry” candidate shall be elected by either of the great prohibition parties. ATTACKING PROHIBITION Dr. N. M. Butler, president of Columbia University, has begun a speaking campaign throughout the country. He is particularly attacking prohibition. It Is known that he desires the Republican nomination. New York Republicans apparently have joined the movement to nominate Mr. Coolidge, at least during the early stages of the balloting. An announcement has been made that the New York State delegation to the Republican national convention will support Mr. .H. C. Hoover, Secretary of Commerce, only if their efforts to nominate Mr. Coolidge fail. The religious issue has not yet been repressed. Mr. B. S. Paulen, Governor of Kansas, said that if the Democrats nominate Mr. Alfred Smith, Governor of New York, the Ku Klux Klan will be revived in his State. To this statement Father Duffy, Mr. Smith's religious adviser and a noted war chaplain, has replied that the Roman Catholics of the United States would fight the Pope if he were a civil ruler who wished to make war against the United States. —A. and N.Z.
