Races on Muriwai Beach
Big Entries Received For N.Z. Motor Cup Racing motorists are now putting j the finishing touches on their cars for the big race meeting at Muriwai. next Saturday. Most of the drivers have had a preliminary run over the course, practicing the “start” and “crossing the creek” at speed, and the beach will probably be busy during this week. The greatest interest, of course, centres around the New Zealand. MotorCup, which has been competed for yearly since 1922. The following are details of the speeds of previous winners:— Turns. M.P.H. 1922 Packard 12-cyl. . . 3 73 1923 Vauxhall 4-cyl. 5 75 1924 Mercer 4-cyl. .. 5 794 1925 Sunbeam 4-cyl. . . 7 80 1926 — Stutz 4-cyl. .. 7 S4£ 1927 Stutz 4-cyl. . . 9 824 This year the number of turns has been increased to 11, whch will probably have the effect of slightly reducing the speed. The following cars have entered: Bore and CapaStroke. city. Model, m.m. c.c. Bugatti 8 (Taylor) . . 1926 60 by 66 1494 Bugatti 4 (East) .. 1927 69 by 100 1496 Chevrolet (Rook) .. 1918 94 by 101 2800 Chrysler (Curlett) .. 1926 89 by 127 4739 Chrysler (Valentine) 1927 82 by 127 4024 Miller 8 (Cutten) .. 1922 59.5 by 89 1980 Thomas 4 (Bauchop) 1924 70 by 97 1493 Stutz 4 (Wilson) .. 1916 97 by 165 4848 Sunbeam 8 (Henning) 1921 65 by 112 2973 Sunbeam 4 (Hamilton) 1913 81.5 by 156 3254 Another entry has been received from
, Australia from Meredith, who will probably bring a Bugatti. The number of Bugattis entering is interesting, for these cars ran first, second and third in the light car Cup last year. The Miller straight eight is one of the team of cars built for the American Tndanapolis race some years ago. The diminutive cylinders have a bore of only 59.5 m.m. or less than 23 inches. The stroke is 3J inches. This is an interesting contrast with the Stutz with a bore of 3 3-16, and the abnormal stroke of 6Jin. One or two of - the other cars are “dark horses," but some are certainly capable of spurts of 100 m.p.h. and the need for care in negotiating turns will make this race a very interesting one. PARKING AT THE BEACH
Three yellow flags will indicate the limit beyond which private cars can not be parked and this point is in control of a horseman. Motorists are warned to be careful where they park as some parts of the beach are treacherous and the car will sink to the hub-caps in a few minutes.
