Eccentric Winds

ANNIVERSARY REGATTA Rawene Snatches Victory INTERMITTENT periods of modest breeze and flat calm eaused some eccentric happenings in the yacht races at the Anniversary Regatta, and produced one or two exciting finishes, particularly in the A and H classes. All classes of craft were represented in the races, which filled an entertaining programme, and were conducted in raees faulty only from the point of view of the yachtsmen.

THE flagship Ronaki rocked almost to its keel when it was seen that the crack clipper Ariki had failed to run with the leaders through the exasperatng calms in the channel. In Ariki’s usual place of command sailed Nga-Toa, a splendid picture, with Rawene and lorangi ait respectful distances. lorangi closed up gradually, and took command in “the straight” to the line, with Nga-Toa still handy, and Rawene a hundred yards back. Opposite the eableship Iris Rawene caught a useful puff, and advanced to Nga-Toa’s quarter. In the drift to the line Nga-Toa appeared still to be safe, when suddenly Rawene slipped ahead, to snatch the race by three seconds. The winner was admirably handled. NECK AND NECK Celox and Starlight had a neck and neck finish in the H Class, and' the peculiarities of the fitful wind were never better illustrated than when Celox caught the wind 30yds from the line, to bowl across a good winner. Good entries in all classes, except the motor-boats, and spectacular performances by fast cruising launches and outboards made the day enjoyable. The flagship was the scow Ronaki, on which the regatta committee dispensed traditional hospitality. •
