WHANGAREI REGATTA
RACING AT MANGANESE POINT Manganese Point, on Whangarei Harbour, was the scene.of great animation yesterday when the Whangarei Cruising Club held its annal regatta. The weather was fine and at first there was little wind, but iater in the day a fresh breeze sprang up. The two excursion boats Eva and Rakanui carried a large number of spectators to the Point. A large assemply of yachts and launches made a picturesque scene. / The second race of the season, for the Palmer Cup, was won by Ranger, manned by the crew which put up such a good fight for the Cornwell Cup. This win gives Ranger seven points, one point behind Scout. Snipe is third with two points.. The mullet boat race was won by Sadie, from scratch. This boat was yery well handled by Mr. Pickmere, jun. The 14-footer championships provided a fine finish, Snipe winning by two seconds from Ranger, with Scout only the length of a bowsprit behind. In the race for the Big Tree Cup for launches Loloma won, with Dawn 11. 18 seconds away, Whati 45 seconds further back in third position. The results were as follow: Ailsa Craig Cup, 4 miles. —Florence (J. Reynolds), I; Kopuru (F. Reynolds), 2. Also started: Loloma (R. Laurie) and Dawn 11. (E. Parker). Palmer Cup, 4 miles.—Ranger (N. Hollows), 1; Scout (W. Pullman), 2; Snipe (C. Lacey), 3. Also started: All Black and Whizz Bang. Won easily. Mullet Boats, 4 miles.—Sadie (H. Pickmere), 1; Rona (R. Baker), 2; Royal Saxon (S. Charlesworth), 3. A very close finish. Fourteen-footer Championship, 4 miles. —Snipe, 1; Ranger, 2; Scout, 3. The only starters. Bi£ Tree Cup, 4 miles.—Loloma, 1; Dawn, 2; Whati, 3. Also started: Kopuru. A close finish.
