BYRNES BEATS GROSE

SPORTS AT HAMILTON CYCLING STARS CLASH ELLIOTT WINS 100 METRES (From Our Oxon Correspondent) HAMILTON, Sunday. The big feature of the sports carnival held by the Hamilton Amateur Athletic Club on Saturday was the meeting of the two cycling champions, F. J. Grose (Canterbury), the New Zealand champion, and M. P. Byrnes (Auckland). The meeting of these two brilliant riders was to some extent marred by an accident to Grose in the first heat of the mile. As a result. Grose did not compete, but reserved himself for the three-mile, which provided the most spectacular event of the day, Byrnes defeating the Dominion champion by half a wheel in a great finish.
