TO-DAY’S TENNIS
NEARING THE FINALS CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY MIXED DOUBLES CONTINOID Play was concentrated on the mixed doubles at the Auckland lawn tennis championships this morning. All the other events are reduced to finals. Playing on top form. Miss Whitelaw and A. K. Turner (Varsity) easily disposed of Miss Ramsay, a shrewd doubles player, and Chisholm, the New Zealand Varsity singles champion. Turner and his partner have been playing together for years, and their combination has remarkably few weak links. Miss Whitelaw was driving and placing splendidly, and Turner was death on high stuff. Tactics carried Miss Nicholls and Brinsden through the semi-final of the mixed, in which they met Miss Pat. Mills and A. C. Johns. It was a nice match, with much pretty volleying and steady ground strokes. Johns brought off a brilliantlyplaced smash occasionally, but Brinsden was too shrewd. Both of the girls were steady and dependable. After losing the first set and being down 4—5 in the second, Johns made an effort and ran out 7—5. The third set was easily Brinsden’s. The other mixed semi-final was a triumph for Miss Knight and Lampe over Miss Whitelaw* and Turner. The older pair always kept the game under control, their clever lobbing repeatedly giving them the opportunity for a winning overhead. The Varsity couple failed to hold their previous form: Lampe came ahead 2 —o and led 3—2, and 5—2 to take the first set 6—3. The second set went to Lampe 6 —4. After he had missed four match points on Miss Whitelaw’s service at 5—3. The last game was a love one on Lampe’s serve. Results of to-day’s play: MIXED DOUBLES Third Round Miss Whitelaw and Turner beat Miss Ramsay and Chisholm 6—3, 6—l. Semi-final. Mrs. Nicholls and Brinsden beat Miss f Miller and A. C. Johns. 6—4, 5—7, 6—2. \ s ‘ s Knight and Lampe beat Miss * nitelaw and Turner, 6—3, 6—4.
