The latter gave a lot of trouble at the bar-

rier, but eventually got away well and ; with Lady Spalpeen led into the 1 straight and past the stand followed by Beau Cavalier, Pekatahi, Uralla, Bold Front and Blago, while Acushla. who evidently broke down, was pulled up at this stage. Going down the back Red Comet was still slightly in advance of Lady Spalpeen, with Uralla and Bold Front lying close behind them. At the half-mile post Henderson’s mount had increased the lead to a length and a-half, and *was first to turn for home, hotly pursued by Bold Front, Pekatahi, Uralla and Blago. Bold Front put in a challenge, but could not sustain the run, and Pekatahi, finishing with a fine rattle, got to within a head of Red Comet at the box. A Stirring Finish Speechless was made a particularly warm favourite for the Devonport Handicap, Ripon Abbey and Winsome Boy being the best backed of the remainder. Lady Robinson got away from the barrier, bolting along the back, but was caught by a spectator. From a good dispatch Lady Robinson soon rushed to the front, and led along the back from Ripon Abbey, Micrometer, Orchus, Abbey Day and Winsome Boy, w;th Luxurious and the favourite last. Crossing the top Lady Robinson had a two-lengths advantage from Ripon Abbey, Micrometer, Orchus, Abbey Day and Winsome Boy, but at the entrance to the*- straight Ripon Abbey, Micrometer and Orchus had lessened the gap and were almost on terms with the leader. Once straightened up the quartette settled down for a real fight, and Lady Robinson weakened at the distance. Micrometer finished best and got the verdict by half a length from Ripon Abbey and Orchus, whom the Judge was unable to separate. Then came Winsome Boy and Lady Robinson.

Latest Race Results will be found in the Stop Press News as they come to hand. ACUSHLA’S ACCIDENT FETLOCK BROKEN SAVED FOR STUD PURPOSES Shortly after the start of the Waiwera High-weight Handicap at Takapuna this afternoon, Acushla was noticed to falter, and dropping well back was pulled up before the stand was reached the first time. Investiga-

tion showed that the black mare had broken a fetlock, but an effort will be made to save her for breeding purposes. Acushla is a four-year-old mare by Prince Meriwee from Jolie Filie, and is owned by Mr. J. D. Kemp, of Penrose. • Acushla’s dam was Merry Maid, a daughter of Hotchkiss and Maid of Athol, her sire being Soult. With such a fine iJedigree Mr. Kemp’s mare should prove a valuable matron. Notes and comments in the Nelson trotting fixture appear on page 9.
