CRICKET UMPIRES AND PLAYERS’ COMMENTS
DISCUSSION BY ASSOCIATION A full meeting of the A.C.A. Umpires Association was held on Tuesday night, and a number of matters were discussed. Members stated that there was a growing tendency on the part of players to comment, on the field, on the decisions given by the umpires, and there also appeared to be too much discussion in the dressing-rooms over decisions and very often a wrong impression was given by a player to the reporters. While the umpires were of the opinion that they could not interfere with comments after the players had left the field of play, it was decided to write to the association and ask them to instruct captains to exercise more control over their teams in this matter, and that for the future any flagrant cases of comment on umpires’ decisions would he reported to the association. In view of the approaching matches with the Australians, the names of available umpires were handed in, and it was pleasing to note ihe willingness of Auckland umpires to travel to any part of New Zealand if their services were required.
