POLICE SURROUND HOTEL

DRAMATIC ARRESTS ON TRAIL OF MURDERER By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Thursday. The police at Liverpool have detained a man and a woman in connection with the alleged theft of a motor-car, which was responsible for the great activity of the London police last week-end. Developments are expected. Twenty detectives surrounded the hotel where the suspects were staying. The man, when confronted by the police, is alleged to have whipped out a fully loaded five-chambered revolver. A detective is said to have

struck the weapon out of his hand just as the trigger was pulled. The gun misfired.—A. and N.Z.-Sun. A previous message said that the weekend activities of the police might have been associated with the brutal murder of Police-Constable Gutteridge on September 27, but this was not confirmed. An intercepted telephone message resulted in most elaborate plans to surprise some motorists who were returning to a garage in Battersea. The plan was successful, and one man was taken to a police station and detained. A search of the garage and the car revealed a service revolver loaded with dum-dum bullets, and a number of surgical instruments and drugs. It was recalled that the murderer of Gutteridge was supposed to have stolen a doctor’s car in which were drugs and instruments.
