PRESERVING NATIVE BUSH

QUESTION DISCUSSED “The Government is not sufficiently alive to the preservation of native flora in the Dominion,” stated a letter from the Napier Chamber of Commerce received by the council of the Auckland branch yesterday. “The duty then falls on the local bodies, and the support of the council was asked in a scheme to purchase bush along tourist routes. The letter then pointed out that the preservation of beautiful and irreplacable bush need not be an expensive matter, as only strips of bush sufficient to preserve the scenic value of the route need be bought. Many owners would be willing to give the land free, and others would negotiate on liberal terms. While fully in sympathy with these views, the council decided that the scheme, though necessary, would be too expensive. The cost might possibly amount to £500,000. Already about £189,000 has been spent in this manner.
