RAIL MILK-TANKER
LINED WITH GLASS 3,000 GALLONS EACH TRIP Another stage in the continued struggle for supremacy which goes on between the railways and the roads was reached recently, says the “Morning Post,” when a fleet of glass-lined milk tankers made their inaugural run between Calveley and London on the London, Midland, and Scottish line. About a year ago the United Dairies, Limited, placed the first milk tanker on the roads at Banbury—then they put the first one on the rail. The tanks have obvious advantages over the old churns in the matter of hygiene, speed, and general convenience. They displace 300 cans and carry 3,000 gallons of milk on the journey. The era of the clanking, cumbersome churn is approaching the end, and recently saw the beginning of its successor. One of the most important features of the new tankers is, of course, their hygienic properties, which would seem to ensure the maximum safeguard against infection being carried from the cow to the consumer. The tanks, lined with glass enamel, are insulated with two inches thickness of cork, protected by thin steel sheeting. This enables the milk to be maintained at a constant temperature of 38deg„ under which conditions bacterial growth is prevented. The saving in the matte? and dead -weight haulage is about 70 per cent, in each case.
