EX-NAVAL IMMIGRANTS
SETTLEMENT SCHEME LAND TRAINING COURSE By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Wednesday.. The Overseas Settlement Committee has enlisted the co-operation of the Ministry of Labour and Earl Beatty in the promotion of a migration scheme to embrace naval ratings after the completion of 12 years’ service. Such men are usually aged about 35. A vocational training establishment is already in existence at Portsmouth, where handymen are turned out. Nov/ it is proposed to supplement this with land training. The migration authorities advocate the establishment of village communities in the Dominions, in which both handymen and land trainees may settle and work cooperatively. It is claimed that the physical fitness and adaptability of these men is superior to that of other migrants. The naval authorities point out the desirability of locating former naval men where they will be able to complete their reservist training and thus qualify for the gratuity of £IOO, when 40 years of age, in addition to the marriage allowance.—A. and N.Z.
