Tennis Champions For The Province
TOURNAMENT OPENS TO-DAY’S RESULTS The Auckland provincial tennis championships were commenced this morning at Stanley Street courts. Full advantage of the permission to play their matches after 4.30 was taken by players and there were few games in the morning. G. Ollivier, New Zealand champion, has not put in an appearance yet and it seems doubtful if lie will play. The Maori girl. Miss Newton, played surprisingly well against Miss Beryl Knight, who ranks first on the Auckland ladder. In the second set Miss Newton was hitting strongly on her forehand and she ran out i> —1 after taking six games on end. Miss Knight, who had been inaccurate, took charge again in the third set, her placing being too good for her opponent. She took the last set to love.
