Cyclone Tears Off Roofs Like Paper
DAMAGE AT NEWCASTLE FIFTEEN HOMES WRECKED By Gable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 10.30 a an. SYDNEY, To-day. The cyclone which visited Newcastle yesterday lasted only 15 minutes, but it carried everything before it, and did damage to the extent of £IO.OOO, none of which was covered by insurance. Accompanied by blinding rain, the cyclone tore its way along a clearlydefined route about 50 yards wide, tlfrough the suburbs of Mayfield and Waratah. Iron and tiled roofs were blown off like paper, and in some instances whirled 100 yards away. Apart from slight head injuries suffered by two won.c.l -were struck by falling debris, ro sualties are reported. Altogether j. 5 homes were wrecked. SPECTACLE AT SEA The passengers on the steamer Maunganui were enthralled for many hours by an amazing electrical storm, and stayed on deck from sundown until midnight watching the spectacle. Throughout the storm it was impossible for the vessel to send or receive wireless messages.—A. and N.Z.
