OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL
ALLOWANCES AND LEVIES At the last meeting of the Ohura County Council advice was received from the Department of Internal Affairs to the effect that Tinder the Counties Amendment Act, 1927, regulations had been issued prescribing the rates of travelling allowances to county council members as follows: For own horse or vehicle, Sd a mile, counted both ways, with 5s for ling or garage expenses. The Rural Counties’ Association wrote to the effect that in connection with the levy on sawmillers of one halfpenny per 100 ft board measurement, a proposal would be made by the Dominion Federated Sawmillers’ Association to collect the levy on the basis of 12J per cent, commission. This proposal is to be submitted to all counties for ratification. Advice was received from the resident engineer, Mr. P. Keller, that a portion of the Huia road, in extent about one mile 28 chains, would be handed over to the control of the council, on his recommendation to the head office. It was resolved on the motion of Crs. Robinson and Sandison that an objection be lodged against handing over the road while the county engineer was unable to inspect it, and that the department be asked to withhold gazetting the transfer till this inspection had been made. The county engineer reported that contract work let and under way totalled a value of £25,531 18s 6d. He also reported that a deposit of boulders suitable for roading purposes in the Turoto Riding, was of very good quality, and many thousands of yards could ba obtained. dajly in running water, and even if this alona could be diverted to Auckland it would provide more water than is being used in the city to-day. Water rights on the creeks would probably not allow of a complete diversion, but It was noticeable that there were a number of streams not included in the 10,500,000 gallon record that, on appearances, were carrying more water than is at present flowing in Nihotupu, and which would probably meet the demands of farmers with little or no assistance. Whatever happens it is not considered likely that the dams will actually be built in the Hunua Ranges in the next ten years, the demands of the city merely requiring the supply available from running streams, botn of which are sufficiently high above the city to allow of gravitation bringing the water to the city.
