DUNDERDALE, Manager. DIESEL ELECTRIC SHIP.—The Diesel electric ship Northland for the U.S. Coastguard Service in the Arctic Circle, has now been completed, and it was hoped to reach Point Barrow this summer. A late start was, however, made, and the vessel had to stop at San Francisco and Seattle, so she may not be able to carry out this plan. In any event, however, the Northland will cross the Arctic Circle during the course of this season, states the “Motor-Shrp-” She is 200 ft b.p., with a beam of 39ft, and Is equipped with two 600 h.p. 410 k.w. Diesel generators supplying power through a double-armature 500 h.p. motor running at the maximum speed of 120 r.p.m. A magnetic clutch is titted between the motor and the propeller, and during the tests this was found to operate very satisfactorily. With one main engine running, a speed of about 8.5 knots was attained, and on the speed trials with full power an average of 11.05 knots was reached. Commander Hotel, who has been in Charge of thd Northland during construction, States that the Diesel electric installation was particularly satisfactory; there was surprisingly little vibration at any spewed and none ef any nnTfrrent W'itixin working range of the engines.
