MISSING AIRMEN COMMISSION SUGGESTED TO INVESTIGATE FLIGHT Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. A cablegram has been received from Melbourne stating that the “Argus,” 111 an editorial, urges the appointment of a Royal Commission, representing Australia and New Zealand, to investigate the flight of the missing ainnen. Lieut. Moncrieff and Captain Hood. “WHAT IS THE GOOD OF FLYING TASMAN?” AIR EXPERT’S QUESTION MELBOURNE, Tuesday. It is stated that although the Commonwealth Government has refused to aid Capt. Moody and Mr. Osmond Jolley in their venture, the Government has no power to stop the flight. Limited by the Constitution, it has only power to deal with inter-State and foreign questions connected with flying, and. even these regulations are indefinite. Major de Havilland, in referring to a cablegram he has sent to Mr. P. Bailey, of New Zealand, regarding the latter’s proposal for a flight over the Tasman Sea, said it was his principle not to supply machines which he thought were not absolutely safe for the work they had to do. What was the good of crossing the Tasman Sea? asked Major de Havilland. He said anyone knew that an airplane could cross the Tasman with a certain amount of luck, but that would not prove anything from an aviation point of view. From a commercial aspect it would be necessary to use a big machine, which would prove costly. A message from Brisbane says the Minister of Defence, Sir T. W. Glr~gow, said the Government’s attitude toward the flight was unchanged. The Government could not sanction a Sight unless the conditions considered to be essential by expert advisers were complied with, and it would not provide any facilities.—A. and N.Z.
