FINE GUNNERY PRACTICE YESTERDAY TARGET STRADDLED AND HIT By Radio.—Special Representative . H.M.S. DIOMEDE?, To-day. After yesterday's impressive performances, to-day’s naval training operations are relatively quiet. TI.M.S. Diomede, steaming: at 22 knots through a dense smoke-screen from the Dunedin, performed her gunnery efficiency tests yesterday afternoon. Elaborate computations must be completed before the final scores are known, but ih the meantime it is sufficient that very high standards were demonstrated. So effective was the shooting, that the target was not only straddled by successive salvoes, but also disabled by several direct hits. The squadron is at present anchored off Mahurangi. It is engaging to-day-in boat-drill and signalling practice, and in the preparations for to-morrow's daybreak attack on Waiwera, where 60 marines who were landed last evening to defend Waiwera and Warkworth are at present consolidating their position.
