TjON DERBY, who claims aq engagement in the Southland Handicap at Forbury Park on Friday, is a three- •‘.r-old gelding by Nelson Bingt Frances Derby, and is o\ the Southern sportsman, ... . .1, J. Delargy. Don Derby’s dam was got by Van Coronado from Lady Derby, who is by F *»schild, a son of Childe h J. Norice, dam of Lady Derby, was imported to this country by Mr. James Pettie 25 years ago, and has given to the New Zealand trotting' turf some great horses, among whom can be named Native King, Nelson Derby, and Nelson Fame. Don Derby did not race as a two-year-old, but was produced at the Kurow Jockey Club f s fixture in October, where, driven by F. G. Holmes, he won a 12furlong heat attractively. He failed in two subsequent tries, but the aristocratically-bred youngster is now in great heart and should make h»s presence felt at Dunedin.
