Record Price For Brother to Episode
84 Yearlings Realise Nearly 30,000 Guineas EIGHTY-FOUR thoroughbred yearlings were sold for 29,905 guineas at the annual bloodstock sales at Trentham yesterday, the average being the fine figure of 356 guineas. This is regarded as a splendid result, and breeders should be spurred to further efforts in their endeavours to improve their stock. To-morrow a large number of two-year-olds and horses in training will be submitted.
After such a successful inauguration of bloodstock sales last year, it was but reasonable to expect that in the future they would be of increased importance. This year’s sale commenced at Trentham yesterday under very favourable weather conditions, and with a large attendance of New Zealand breeders and owners, together with a sprinkling of Australians looking for new blood. A large number of yearlings were submitted, totalling about 150, so that yesterday’s programme was; a particularly busy one. * A start was made just after 10.30 a.m., when Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., in conjunction with Messrs. H. Chisholm and Co., Sydney, offered their catalogue, comprising 101. When they concluded this lot this afternoon, Messrs. Pine, Gould, Guinness’, Ltd., in conjunction with Messrs. William Inglis and Son, Ltd., Sydney, brought forward their lot, comprising 43 yearlings. RECORD PRICE FOR EPISODE’S' BROTHER The first catalogue offered was that of Wright, Stephenson and Company, in conjunction with H. Chisholm and Company, Sydney, Mr. K. Austin being the auctioneer. He opened sensationally by securing 2,300 guineas for Mr. G. M. Currie’s Limond—Homage colt, brother to Episode, who excited ready bidding before Mr. G. D. Greenwood secured him. It was a record price for a yearling in New Zealand, beating the 2,250 guineas, which Mr. Currie secured for Thespian’s brother (by Absurd—Leta), sold at Wanganui three years ago to an Australian buyer. Later in the day the Absurd—Rose Queen filly realised 1,075 guineas, and she goes to South Australia. It was a notable sale for Mr. G. M. Currie, who thus had the credit of) breeding the only four-figure yearlings sold during the day. The following are the details of the sale. On Account of Mr. G. M. Currie Gns.
