FAST MOUNTAIN CLIMB Roaring - up the steep twisted road to the top of Mount Diablo, California (U.S.A.), a strictly stock Whippet touring car has just established a new record of 24min. 5 3-ssec. for the 11.6 mile climb. The new mark clips 14 l-ssec. off the former record, established a year ago, and wins the perpetual trophy offered for this event. The record-breaking Whippet had been driven several thousand miles before being put to the severe test up the rugged mountain, and no special preparations were made before the Climb except to grind the valves. The road up Mount Diablo is a toll highway. It has an earth surface, and in many places, especially on the sharp, dangerous curves, there are quantities of loose gravel. In several places the road is very narrow, several “switchback» curves adding to the severity of the test.
