Y.M.C.A. OVERWHELMS GRAFTON BY INNINGS
MILLER’S BRIGHT DISPLAY It was quite a pleasant change to see batsmen hitting out on Saturday instead of tapping the balls about and trying to find out who would stay at the crease the longest and get the lowest score. Y.M.C.A., with 220 for four wickets as against Grafton’s four for 73, continued their first innigs with Miller 67, and Peoppel, four not out, and concluded by winning by an innings and 93 runs. Goodwin and Snedden opened the bowling, and suited the batsmen down to the ground. BREEZY CRICKET Fast scoring was the order of the day, both batsmen annexing fours in the first over. Displaying a really impressive style, Peoppel hit up a clever 29 before being clean-bowled by Snedden. It took the pair 17 minutes to add 40 runs, mostly in boundaries. Otter went in when Miller was 89, and still batting strongly. Miller then played a good ball badly and was bowled by Snedden for 92. His innings was most spectacular and was one of the berst seen in the match. He hit one 6 and 14 fours. Y.M.C.A. declared with eight wickets down for 298.
Horspool and Sloman commenced proceedings for Grafton’s second strike. Here again the scoring livened up, and the bowlers were being knocked about. Sloman was beaten by a beautiful ball from Bowley when 13, and Dykes came on. Horspool was caught by Miller at 25, and Wylie went in. Then Dykes fell when he hit a catch to Otter. Hopkins joined Wylie, but lasted for six, when he was caught in slips. Street and Wylie brought the score, to 93, when Street was given out lbw. Turvey came in and Lyon took the ball. He got Wylie on his fourth ball, the next man, Wilson, with his fifth, and Hamilton with his seventh, a truly remarkable bowling feat. Snedden went in at 94 and was run out for three. Goodwin was last man.
This pair made things look hopeful, especially Goodwin, who did not fail once to slog the bowling. Fours were the order of things, and Goodwin hit 13 off five balls from Peoppel. The latter then placed a ball between Turvey’s legs and the innings closed for 132, giving Y.M.C.A. a victory by an innings and 93 runs. On the whole the batting, fielding and bowling for Y.M.C.A. was superior to that of the Grafton team, and Hunt as wicket-keeper for the whiners gave a clever and snappy exhibition. Lyon and Elliott shone among Y.M.C.A.’s bowlers. For Grafton Horspool gave a glimpse of his old form. Goodwin was doing great things, and proved an effective “tail.” It was a decisive win by the better teamDetails:— : GRAFTON First Innings 73 Second Innings SLOMAN, b Bowley 13 HORSPOOL, c Miller, b Elliott .... 25 DYKES, c Otter, b Elliott 16 HOPKINS, c Pearce, b Elliott .... 6 STREET, lbw, b Pearce 12 WYLIE, b Lyon 16 WILSON, b Lyon 0 HAMILTON, b Lyon 0 SNEDDEN, run out 3 TURVEY, b Peoppel 5 GOODWIN, not out .. . . * 31 •Extras 5 Total 132 Bowling.—Bowley, 1-39; Lyon. 3-33: Elliott, 3-17; Pearce, 1-25; Peoppel, 1-13; Fall of wickets.—2s, 58, 59, 6S, 93, 94, 9i, 94, 97, 132.
