STAR STRANGER’S VICTORY
Fast Times at Trentham
SURPRISE IN TELEGRAPH HANDICAP CSpeciaZ to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Saturday. rE Wellington Racing Club’s summer fixture opened to-day in beautiful weather before a large attendance. The track was in splendid order, consequently fast times ' were recorded. Speculation was brisk, the machine handling £59,540, compared with £47,193 last year.
THE FIRST TO AIRTIGHT A LL started in the opening event, the Trentham High-weight Handicap. First Sight £1,538, Rotowhero £ 827, and Amorist £ 665, were the best backed. The favourite lost the best part of three lengths at the start, and this cost him the race. When they had settled down Amorist, Flying Shot, Airtight, Rotowhero, Greengrocer, Sneerer, Mandarine and First Sight was the order, the last-named moving up further on, and lying third at the five furlongs. Into the straight Amorist, Flying Shot and Airtight were on terms with First Sight and Rotowhero, with Greengrocer close up, and at the false rail Airtight held command with Amorist, with the favourite and Greengrocer showing up. Airtight hung on well, to score by half-a-length from Amorist, First Sight inches away. Two lengths away was Historic and Greengrocer together, and then Green Cloth, Clavers and Sneerer. PAGAN ELLI’S BRILLIANCY A fine field of eight came out for the Wellington Stakes, Childsplay, who went down sore, being entrusted with £2,355, against Paganeili £1,267, Staghunter £829, and Gascony £739 the last-named also being sore. At the start the favourite dwelt slightly and was ridden out of the barrier. Paganelli was the first to show out from a splendid despatch, and at the end of
half a furlong led Childsplay, Prince Humphrey, Staghunter, Golden Armour. Gascony and Silvermine. With a furlong and a-half covered, Paganeili was half-a-length in front of the favourite, but at the three-furlong post these two were running neck and neck, with Prince Humphrey, Staghunter and Golden Armour in line two and a-half lengths back, while Gascony was another length and a-half away. Childsplay weakened half a furlong from home and was eased. By this time Prince Humphrey and Gascony had put in thier claims, but Paganeili held his own, to score handsomely, half a length ahead of Prince Humphrey, with Gascony going fast a neck away. Childsplay was three lengths further back fourth, with Staghunter and Golden Armour close up together. Silvermine was well back just in front of Baskier. It was a fine race, with the best horse winning. Childsplay did not look so well as in the spring, and it is doubtful if she will last much longer. FAVOURITE’S EASY VICTORY The Apprentices’ Plate attracted a field of fourteen, Lady Limond £2,239 and Goshawk £1,972, monopolising the betting market. At the start Goshawk was slow to move away, and Ladykiller also dwelt. Blimp, The Swell, Amor, Wild Work, Lady Limond and Wayward were in the van early, and at the five furlongs Lady Limond took charge from Wayward, Goshawk, "Wild Work, Ladykiller, Amor and Blimp. Crossing the top the favourite was clear, and led into the straight by a length and a-half from Wayward, who was two lengths clear of Goshawk and Wild Work, with Ladykiller and Blimp following. As soon as they were straightened up, the lad on Lady Limond pulled his whip, and 'amid the cheers of the crowd rode a hard finish to win by eight lengths from the unlucky Goshawk, who was a neck in front of The Swell, who was badly interfered with early in the race. Arikiwai finished very strongly in fourth place, and there was daylight to Blimp. Wayward anc. Amor, with Wild Work. Starflight, Ladykiller and Bourse following. HIGH DISDAIN’S GOOD PRICE A big field of 25 lined up for the Fitzherbert Handicap, Goblin Market. £1,332, winding up a firm favourite, with fair support for Moorgas £713, Amplifier-Par! bracket £528, while High Disdain,, the top weight, was only sixth choice, and when he won gave a double-figure return to his supportters. Soon after the, start High Disdain, Pari and Briar Root, on the extreme outside, were most prominent, and as they swept on to the course proper there was a bunch comprising High Disdain, Briar Root, Pari, Moorgas, Consent, Banket, Amplifier an,d Flicker, with the first-mentioned doing it well in front. Then Consent challenged, and in a fine finish between the pair High Disdain won by a head. Flicker a length back third*. Goblin Market finished fouth, with Full Feather, Pari, Royal Duke, Tcheka, Moorgas and Kaihora next. AN IMPRESSIVE EFFORT
Star Stranger accomplished a brilliant effort in the Wellington Cup, coming through at the false rail to score impressively. Battlement and Overhaul were the course scratchings, and there was a field of fourteen left in. The top weights monopolised the betting, and when the machine closed. Laughing Prince £1,402, Star Stranger £1,272, Piuthair £1,249, Mask £1.214 and Set Sail £1,062, carried the bulk of the •investments. At the start Bennanee, Pink Note and Papatu were chopped out, and in the race for positions, Set Sail showed the way with
Mask past the stands and out of the straight, followed by Joy Bird, Pink Note, Piuthair, Laughing Prince, Black Mint, David Garrick, Papatu, Bennanee, Countersign. Star Stranger, with Novar and Ark Royal the last pair, the latter breaking down and pulling up at the seven furlongs. Entering the back stretch, Joy Bird ran up to Set Sail, the pair being a length ahead of Mask, Black Mint and Pink Note, with Papatu, Bennanee, Laughing Prince, Piuthair, Countersign, Novar and Star
Stranger following. There was little alteration in the next couple of furlongs, but as they commenced to cross the top. Star Stranger moved up and got on the rails. Set Sail was joined by Bennanee as they began to turn into the straight, Joy Bird, Pink Note, Mask, Laughing Prince, Piuthair and Star Stranger following in fairly close order. Then Star Stranger made his effort, and just inside the false rail he was with Set Sail and Pink Note. Finishing very strongly Star Stranger drew away and went on to win by a length and a-half from Pink Note, with Set Sail a head away. Joy Bird was a length further back fourth, Piuthair fifth, Laughing Prince sixth, and then came Countersign, David Garrick, Bennanee, Novar, Mask, Papatu and Black Mint last. The distance beat Mask, Laughing Prince, Set Sail, Joy Bird anfd Black Mint. Le Choucas was entrusted with £1,146 in the Anniversary Handicap, as against Sir Roy’s £B4O, and Duke Abbey £Bl7. At the start Magna 9harta was slow off, while Nincompoop, Le Choucas and Horomea began best, and led out from Alyson, Gala Day, Duke Abbey, Damaris, Cosmetic, Sir Archie, Vertigern, Ring Boy and Assurance, with Front Rank last. At the five furlongs Le Choucas, Nincompoop, Gala Day, Duke Abbey, Horomea, Damaris, Alyson, Cosmetic and Ring Boy was the order, with Front Rank, Assurance and Sir Roy the last three. Into the straight Le Choucas and Gala Day were together ahead of Duke Abbey, Nincompoop, Alyson, Damaris and Horomea. Inside the false rail Duke Abbey bumped Le Choucas heavily, and the latter and Gala Day were badly interfered with. Duke Abbey went on to win by a clear length from Nincompoop, with Le Choucas a neck away. Horomea was fourth, and Ring Boy, Sir Archie, Damaris, Alyson, Vertigern, Gala Day and Front Rank next. FAVOURITE ROUTED
There were 19 starters in the open sprint, the Telegraph Handicap, Aussie £1,734, Crown Area £1,243, Cimabue £992, and Good As Gold £652 being best backed. From what could be seen after the start Shirley, Good As Gold, The Hawk, Booster and Aussie were early prominent, and on to the course proper and in line were Covent Garden, Crown Area, Good As Gold, The Hawk, Aussie and Joy King, with Money Order and Paperchase behind them. At the false rail Paperchase hit the front, and finishing brilliantly went on to win by two lengths from Money Order, who was not at all well ridden. The Hawk was only a head away third, with Crown Area right up fourth. Then
came Good As Gold, Shirley, Cimabue, Joy King, Royal Damon, Limited and Aussie. After going three furlongs Booster fell. TRIPLE DEAD HEAT There was a great finish in the final event, the Ruapehu Handicap, three horses dead-heating for first place. Broad Acre £2,385 was a hot first choice, Camisader £1,163, Polydectes £1,073 receiving most support of the remainder. At the start Dimmer played up, and got away badly, Billikins, The Raider and Broad Acre getting away smartly, and they were attended on to the course proper by Camisader, Skyquest (wide out), Bronstell and Erin-go-Bragh. The favourite was in front at the false rail, when first Billikins and then Polydectes and Gannymede came at him. In a slashing finish Broad Acre, Polydectes and Gannymede went over the line together,* the judge being unable to separate them. Billikins was a. length away and then came Addlepate, Camisader, Dimmer, The favourites’ backers lost mtmey, whereas Gannymere paid a big double figure return.
