HOT ON TRAIL OF CONSTABLE’S SLAYER
AN ARREST IN LONDON Bg Cable.—Press Association. — copyright. LONDON, Sunday. The week-end witnessed cinema-like activities on the part of the London police. This may be associated with the brutal murder of Police Constable Gutteridge on September 27, but this is not confirmed. An intercepted telephone message resulted in most elaborate plans to surprise some motorists who were returning to a garage in Battersea. The plan was successful and one man was taken to a police station and detained. It is reported that he attempted to commit suicide in his cell. A search of the garage and the car revealed a service revolver loaded with dumdum bullets and a number of surgical instruments and drugs. The police went to a house in Tooting and discovered another service revolver fully loaded. On returning to the garage they found a third revolver. Some reports say three men are now detained. The search was continued all night long. It is recalled that the murderer of Gutteridge was supposed to have stolen a doctor’s car in which were drugs and instruments. —A. and N.Z.
