EXPLOSION DISASTER IN ISLANDS PARTY TRAPPED IN FLAMES By Cable.- Press Association:- Copyright. SUVA, Friday. The British Resident Commissioner at Vila, New Hebrides, reports that a serious fire and explosion occurred at Vila on the night of January 17. Two main stores of the Ballande Company and the bulk store of the De Bechade Company were completely demolished, together with three small buildings and some timber yards. Nc Government buildings, condominium or British, were affected. The known casualties are as follow: Deaths: Europeans, 6; Chinese and Tonkinese, 3. Severely injured: Europeans, 7; French natives, 15. Minor injuries: French and other Europeans, 4; natives, 30. The British commandant of police and the assistant-com-mandant received superficial injuries in the execution of their duty. The fire has ljeen extinguished and the position is well in hand. The loss is estimated unofficially at £200,000. A message from Sydney says advices received from the New Hebrides state that nine persons were burned to death in the fire, which destroyed the premises of the French New Hebrides Company. The manager and five members of his staff were entrapped in a store and were unable to escape. Many persons were injured by the exploding of ammunition. —A. and N.Z.
