War Flares Again in Yangtse Valley
TEEMING WITH TROOPS GRAVE CLASH WITH JAPANESE By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 11.50 a.m. SHANGHAI, Friday. The Yaugtse Valley is again teeming with military activity and Hankow is again erecting barricades in expectation of Communist uprisings taking advantage of the hostilities downstream before occupation by the military. Several naval engagements occurred on the Yangtse. Chengling, above Hankow, was shelled by four Nationalist warships. The Japanese report the most serious duel with the Chinese warships since the establishment of the Chinese Republic. Land forces at Chengling, replying with artillery in a three-hour engagement, disabled one of the warships. The other retreated. The city was partially demolished. There is no estimate of the casualties. —A. and N.Z.
