Y.W.C.A. NEWS

BOARD AND EXECUTIVE MEETING A. meeting of board and executive members of the Young Women’s Christian Association was held yesterday to conduct the necessary business, and also to make preparations for the entrance into the new hostel. The devotional period at the commencement of the meeting was conducted by the president, Mrs. C. W. Garrard, who made reference to the conference and convention which had just been concluded at Paerata, and particularly to the re-wording of the “Purpose” in order that it may be more intelligible and mean more to the girl members. Confusion had arisen between the basis and the purpose or aim of the association. The basis, it was pointed out, remained as at present, viz., “Faith in God the Father as Creator, and in Jesus Christ His only Son as Lord and Saviour, and in the Holy Spirit as revealer of truth and source of power, life and service, according to the teaching of Holy Scripture.” With this basis, the re-statement of purpose made clear the channels through which th© association was endeavouring to mould the lives and characters of girls. It was reported that the new hostel would be ready for occupation by February 1, and that the official opening ceremony would tak© place on March 14, when her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson had graciously indicated her willingness to tak© part in the opening function: The old hostel had been sold through the efforts of Mr. J. J. Seymour, to whom was passed a vote of thanks for his generosity in making a handsome donation from the commission due him. It was also reported that the cafeteria was now under new management. Two domestic science graduates were now in charge, and it was hoped to see this department providing wholesome and attractive meals for the general public as well as girls. There was every indication of a fine year in the health and recreation department, as the department is to have the services of Miss Wager, Bedford College, and of Miss Faraday, Liverpool College. The appointment w#s made of Miss Vera McLean as business secretary in place of Miss Margaret Edmond, who will be leaving next month to take up the position of assistant general secretary to the Perth Y.W.C.A. Miss Audrey McCrea was appointed to represent th© association at the New Zealand Yojith Workers* Conference, to be held' at Waikanae at the end of this month. A full report of the national conference and convention would be given at the board meeting next month.
