SPORT and WARFARE
Sports and warfare have been linked together since time when the memory of man runneth not to the contrary, says John Kieran in the New York “Times.” The Battle of Waterloo, Wellington said, was won on the cricket fields of Eton. When the Spanish Armada was sighted off the English coast, Sir Francis Drake and other English captains were bowling on the green. “Let the game,go on!” said Drake. The Spanish visitors were warmly received when the game was finished. START OF THE MARATHON When Miltiades repulsed the Persian host in 490, 8.C., where “the mountains look on Marathon, and Marathon looks on the sea,” Pheidippides toed the mark in the little seaside town and dashed off to Athens, 26 miles 385 yards away, to bear the glad tidings. Thus was the first marathon race started.
