YANGTSE BATTLE
STRUGGLE FOR CONTROL HOSTILITIES BEGIN By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 11.25 a.m. SHANGHAI, Thurs. Rivalry to control the Yangtse has resulted in an outbreak of hostilities between the forces of the Nanking Government, under Chiang-Kai-Shek, and independents, under Bei-Tsung-Chi, formerly Chiang’s chief of staff, who was responsible for the capture of Shanghai. Fighting broke out in the vicinity of Changsha. With one steamer having already landed a large consignment of arms and ammunition for the armies of Chang-Tso-Lin and Sun-Chuan-Fang, and with another en route to Newchwang from Manila with a similar consignment, the Nationalist Government announces that it is taking action regarding the suppliers of cargo and the reported suppliers of arms to German firms now existing in the territory under Nationalist control. Foreigners will be arrested and punished. Orders have been issued for the detention of the vessel from Manila. Nationalist gunboats are seeking to prevent her from reaching her destination. A Japanese cruiser reported that the vessel was skirting the coast off Formosa, to elude capture.—A. and N.Z.
