“PRIVATE IZZY MURPHY” In “Private Izzy Murphy,” the Warner picture starring George Jessel, featuring Vera Gordon and Patsy Ruth Miller, and directed by Lloyd Bacon and coming to the Majestic Theatre tonight, the actual parade of the returning ‘Old Sixty-Ninth” up Fifth Avenue is shown with Governor Smith, Mayor Hylan, William Randolph Hearst and other notables in the reviewing stand. Private Izzy Goldberg had taken the name of “Murphy” for business reasons and when assigned to the Irish regiment he still kept the name, thinking the thorny path might be made a bit easier. The boys accepted him as “Private Izzy Murphy,” a name which he never disgraced.
His parents come from the Ghetto to witness the big parade, but with broken hearts, for word has come that their boy has been killed in action Then they see him, proud in his 0.D., helmet, gun, hobnails, puttees and all! It’s a hale, heart-warming picture, Private Izzy Murphy.” A story of youth, bravery, love and honour with many a chuckle and an occasional tear, and the inference that it’s a pretty good old world after all!
Mr. John Whiteford-Waugh and his popular Majestic Orchestra play as their overture “Potted Overtures” (J. Engleman), and a feast of incidental music, including selection from the musical comedy, ‘‘Prince of Pilsen” (Luders), “Popular Hits’* bv W. Clark “Four Popular Songs” (Ludowitz)! Selection of Popular American Airs ” a duet, “Mad Scene,” from “Lucia de Lammernioor,” and “Intermezzo” from LAmico Tritz” (Mascagni). An attractive interlude will be provided by the well-known Auckland baritone, Mr. Walter Brough, who will render in his programme “Will o* the wisp” and “The Fishermen of England.” °
An additional attraction on the pictorial supporting programme will be a beautiful scenic, “Opal Isles of Sicily” and a special New Zealand Gazette, includmg scenes of the new T. and G buildings Archbishop Averin unveiling St. George’s Memorial at Wanganui, and West Coast athletic Champions.
