DECIDED IMPROVEMENT FIGURES FOR 1927 A substantial improvement over the figures for the previous year is revealed in the returns of New Zealand’s overseas trade in 1927 supplied by the Customs Department The exports for December, valued at £5,398,484, are recorded at the highest figure for that month since December, 1924, when the total was £5,911,445. They show an increase of £1,766,786 on the figures for December, 1926. Imports for December, 1927, recorded at £3,949,198, are £438,898 below the figures for the corresponding period of 1926. Exports for the year register an increase of £3,220,779 and imports a reduction of £8,327,396, making the aggregate improvement £8.337,396. An indication of the trend of trade during the past five years is contained in the following table:— Year Exports. Imports. The position for the last six months of 1927 is decidedly better than at any time during the past five years, imports exceeding exports by £4,678,230, compared with £9,369,242 in 1926, £10,578,099 in 1925, £6,831,487 in 1924, and £7,597,190 in 1923. Exports over that period, valued at £17,904,012, were only exceeded during the last five years in 1924, when the flg;ures were £19,051,713. SOUTHERN EXCHANGES YESTERDAY’S SALES Press Association. The market for New Zealand lamb is weaker, and the demand is limited. Prime North Island ewes, 481 b to 541 b, 5d a lb. G.A.Q. Australian lamb, 2Slb to 361 b. 8d; third quality, 6d. The market for Australian lamb is dull and declining. The demand runs principally on finest qualities. Beef.—Argentine chilled hinds, 6Jd a lb; fores, 4£d. Pork.—English pork, 801 b to 1001 b, lOd; New Zealand porkers. 801 b to 1001 b, Sd; 1001 b to 1201 b, 7ld; baooners, 1201 b to 1701 b, 6£d; 1701 b and over, 6d. Frozen Lamb.—Further decline expected as stocks increase; no forward business reported.
