Pairs Championship Continued AUCKLANDERS PROMINENT Carlton Pair Win Their Green . CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. THE New Zealand bowling championships were continued in line weather, and under ideal conditions to-day. The pairs competition,. which commenced on Tuesday, was proceeded with. Seventeen greens are in use and 416 players are participating. The Auckland representatives have acquitted themselves fairly well in this competition. Walker, of Ponsonby, just missed the qualifying section and Clarke and Coutts (Carlton) have been returned as green winners. (Special to TSJB SUN.J

PROFESSOR WALKER is very populart with the bowling public, and his games are always watched with keen interest. He has a fine personality and is never beaten until the last bowl has been played. Some of his displays in the rink games were very meritorious and he is picked to show up well'to-fcforrow in the rinks. On the Sumner green Turner and Findlay, of the Mount Eden Club, have three wins and two losses, Findlay defeating Feilding to-day, 20 —11, the Hataitai player being recognised as a hard man to beat. Redpath, the pairs champion of 1924, tied for this section with Feilding, four wins and one loss each. In the play-off Feilding was returned as green winner. On the Canterbury green W. Coltman and Lamb, of the Carlton Club, had three losses and two wins for the five rounds played, being defeated in the third round by Benefield, of St. John’s, Wanganui, 28 —19. 'At New; Brighton, Maxwell Walker, partnered by C. Mustin, finished the five rounds with one loss, and as Neill, of the Dunedin Club, secured the maximum wins, Walker fails to enter the qualifying section. The match between Neill and the Ponsonby skip was a great display, and was productive of some good generalship, victory finally resting with the Dunedin man, 24—23. Walker won both matches to-day and is playing well. CARLTON HARD TO BEAT H. Clarke. Carlton Club, the singles winner. of the Dominion championship of 1927, partnered by A. Coutts, playing on the Beckenham green, came through the section with four wins and one loss, J. Kruse, of Hastings, defeating him in the “first round on Tuesday, 25—17. Three tied in this section with four wins, and three games of eight heads were necessary to find the green winner,. Clarke, proving successful. The Carlton representative will be hard to beat In the semi-finals, Clarke also still having a life in the championship singles on the same green. The Mount Eden pair, Sheriffs and Corines, have registered three wins and suffered two defeats, among the wins being that against Tyrell, of Roslyn, who is a semi-finalist in the rinks to be staged on Thursday, Cornes heating. Tyrell, 23 —19, the Mount Eden representatives failing to qualify on the Cashmere green. Remuera was represented by McMillar and Bray, and has won three games and lost two. One of Bray’s wins was. that well-known player, Kerr, Of Masterton, 22—17. On the Barrington green Nairn and Bainbridge, of the Mount Eden Club, have four wins and one loss. Being the winner of section PI, he plays’ off with A. Smellie, winner of section P2, to determine the green winner.' ' Smellie, now of St. Clair, was the pair winner with Blackwood, of Green island Club, Dunedin, in 1915, and is playing particularly well, and Bainbridge will have to show his. best form to have a chance of holding the Southerner. In the play-off on the Kaiapoi green W. Bates and G. Deare, of Carlton Club, have four, wins and ope loss, F. Smith, the well-known Kaituna (Dunedin) player, defeating Deare in the second round, 20—19. The Carlton representatives retaliated by defeating Smith for the-winner of section. Ml, and they play off with Logan, winner of section M2, on the Papanul Green. G. Walker and unnamed partner (POnsonby) can only show two wins as against three losses. Hosking, West End, playing at Sydenham, won his only game in the doubles to-day, beating Rollinson, 16—11. Hosking is partnered by A. Hardley, their final game being lost to Lomas, of Kelburn. . .. WALKER A BIG DRAW Gladding and A. Coltman, of the Carlton Club, playing at Edgeware, registered two wins and three losses and failed to qualify. At' the Lin wood green Daisley and -Trayes, Mount Eden, played,: off -for section winner against a Sydenham rink, and were defeated by a , narrow • margin on the Christchurch ) green. ' McCallum and Wooller, Remuera, won three games and lost two* Wooller has been off colour for a few days, but he is playing well now, and promises to perform well in the singles, and he may be called upon to play to-morrow*.

The draw for the championship singles has not yet been announced. Needham and Bremner, West End, failed to qualify at the Opawa green. The draw for the continuation of the post sectional play for the rinks is as follows: —Walker (Ponsonby) plays Bremner (West End); Findlay (Mount Eden) plays Moyes (Timaru); Foster (Caledonian) meets Feilding (Hataitai); Kerr (Masterton) meets Tyrell (Roslyn); Rennie (Christchurch) meets Redpath (Canterbury); Gordon (St. John’s) plays Chambers (Sumner) ; Edwards (Temuka), a bye. The. rink matches commence at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the St. Alban’s green and as this is considered one 1 of the fastest playing areas in Christchurch the games should be very interesting. Walker and Bremner are sure to be a draw, and Feilding and Foster should also be a good match.

INTER-ISLAND MATCH

TO-DAY’S BIG CONTEST Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Wed. To-morrow morning rinks will be played on St. Albans green. The green winners will be decided at Linwood and the singles will be continued at Sydenham. ’The pairs competition will be continued at Edgeware to-morrow afternoon. One of the events of the tournament, the North v. South Island match, will take place on the Canterbury Club’s green in the afternoon, when the visitors will be entertained by the president of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Mr. A. J. The fiith round of the pairs championship was concluded in the after- 1 noon, and the section winners, and in some instances the green winners, were found. The remainder of the green winners will be sorted out tomorrow mornirg, after which the green champions will continue in postsectiofial play. The decision will be “sudden death.” - The champions in 1923, W. McCallum and T. Edwards (Temuka), came through the sectional play without a loss, but E. A. Smith and J. N. Du Feu (St. Albans) defeated them by 25 to 15 in the play-off for green winners. A similar fate befell J. Angus and J. A. Redpath (Canterbury), who won the championship in 1924. They tied for top place in the sectional play with Kershaw and W. Fielding (Hataitai), both pairs having one loss, and in the play off were beaten by 18 to 17. M. Walker (Auckland), who, with A. Brackebush, won the pairs championship last year, is partnered this year by C. Muston. They scored only four wins in their section, failing to qualify.
