CANDIDATE ASSAILED “YOU’LL LOSE YOUR DEPOSIT” By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Tuesday. In connection with the forthcoming by-election for the Faversham Division of Kent, necessitated by the death of Sir Granville Wheler, Mr. Ernest Hailwood, who had already stood as an Independent Conservative at the two by-elections and had lost his deposit in each case, attended to-day at the Guildhall, where he handed in his nomination papers. On leaving he was angrily attacked by a group of orthodox Conservatives, who shouted: “You are not a Conservative; you are a Socialist. You will lose your £150.” Mr. Hailwood retorted: “I am a Conservative. You blighters are not fit to x be Conservatives or Socialists, or anything else.” The by-election will be a four-cornered contest.—A. and N.Z. Lieutenant-General Sir Granville Wheler died on December 15, 1927. He had represented Faversham since 1910. At the general election in 1924 the voting was:— Sir G. Wheler (Con.) 14,432 Rev. S. Morgan (Labour) .. 9,180 A. J. Solomon (Liberal) . . . . 7,132 Conservative majority . . .. 5.252
